Washington, DC (August 5, 2019) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the Teacher Quality and Retention Program (TQRP) Summer Institute at its annual two-week conference in Houston, TX with 92, aspiring new teachers representing 28 of TMCF’s 47 publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

TQRP is designed for pre-service and early career teachers (up to the third year in the classroom). Through the years the program has provided high-quality, pre-service training, as well as personalized support once teachers enter into the classroom for nearly a thousand motivated young leaders committed to being the best educators in their communities with a special emphasis on African American males, and STEM teachers. It is estimated that because of TQRP Fellows, over 30,000 students are impacted each year. Overall, 85 percent of TQRP graduates are in education and state that they intend to remain in the profession, compared to more than half of all early career teachers who leave the profession.

Through the years TQRP has received financial support from very generous corporate partners such as Amgen Foundation, Apple, Capital One, DuPont Foundation, MillerCoors, Nike, Voya Foundation, and Wells Fargo.

At this year’s Summer Institute, the TQRP Fellows engaged in rigorous professional development and discussed innovative education strategies and ideas including but not limited to: Student Engagement, Differentiated Instruction, Trauma-Informed Teaching, Data-Driven Instruction, Student Achievement, Standards-Based Instruction, Swift coding sessions presented by Apple, a K-12 hands-On Banking program presented by Wells Fargo and an interactive Credit Wise session presented by Capital One.
