Yesterday, the House Labor, HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee held a hearing today with Secretary Arne Duncan. This was the Secretary’s opportunity to present the Administration’s proposed FY 16 budget for the Department of Education.
- Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) questioned the Secretary about the lack of funding for HBCUs. She insisted that funding for Community Colleges and the Administration’s First In the World proposed program funding not replace dedicated funding for HBCUs.
- The Secretary noted that the Community College proposal would result in funding going to HBCU Community Colleges.
- The hearing was a little heated at times. Several members raised the issue of fraud in the Pell program. There was also a discussion on making technical and career training more attractive to students.
Representative Tom Cole (R-OK) is the Chair of the House Labor HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee. Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) serves as the Ranking Member.
