What is the Novartis US Foundation HBCU Scholarship?

The Novartis US Foundation HBCU Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship program, providing up to $10,000 a year, designed for eligible sophomores attending the identified 26 undergraduate/graduate programs at Historically Black colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and including four Historically Black Medical Schools.

Scholars will also have opportunities to grow their key technical, professional and leadership skills through Novartis employee led mentoring, leadership development, and career readiness courses.

Why did Novartis US Foundation create the program?

The Novartis US Foundation is partnering with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) over 10 years, as an initial step in creating equitable access to affordable high-quality education for development of future leaders, particularly in health and social equity-related fields. This partnership puts HBCUs at the center of creating solutions, through several strategies, including establishing faculty research grants and supporting annual scholarships, career readiness and leadership development for HBCU students.

What is Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s (TMCF) involvement/role?

Novartis is partnering with Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to attract, source and select the recipients of the Novartis Foundation Scholars & Jobs program scholarship.




The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), and Novartis US Foundation are proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding students attending the identified 24 undergraduate programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Seventy-two (72) scholars will be selected to receive a multi-year renewable scholarship up to $10,000 for the 2022 – 2023, 2023- 2024, and 2024 – 2025 academic school years which can only be applied to verifiable costs associated with average tuition and usual fees.  In addition, scholarship recipients will participate in a mentoring program featuring healthcare leaders.

Who is eligible to apply?
● Be enrolled full-time as a sophomore during the 2022-2023 academic school year at one of the 24 identified HBCUs majoring in one of the following: Business, Health-focused social work, Nursing, Public health, or STEM
OR
● Enrolled as a full-time student in one of the four HBCU medical schools or in a
healthcare related graduate programs at an HBCU
● Current cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
● Able to demonstrate leadership abilities
● Able to demonstrate a financial need
● Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551

Forty-eight (48) scholars will be selected to receive a multi-year renewable scholarship up to $10,000 for the 2022 – 2023, 2023- 2024, and 2024 – 2025 academic school years which can only be applied to verifiable costs associated with average tuition and usual fees.   In addition, scholarship recipients will participate in a mentoring program featuring healthcare leaders.  Note: Participation is optional for graduate students. 

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Enrolled as a full-time student in one of the four HBCU medical schools or in a healthcare related graduate program at an HBCU. 
  • Must be enrolled in a healthcare related graduate programs
  • Current cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Able to demonstrate leadership abilities
  • Able to demonstrate a financial need
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551.

Are the scholarships renewable?
Scholars who continue to meet the criteria, remain in good standing and maintain full-time status and a minimum of 3.0 GPA in university will be eligible for annual scholarship renewals.

Do students have to enroll in TMCF member schools to be eligible for this scholarship?
The program is open to students attending one of the identified 26 undergraduate /graduate Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and including four Historically Black Medical Schools. Students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled as a full-time student in one of the identified 26 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and including four Historically Black Medical Schools are eligible for participation.

May I apply to the Novartis US Foundation if I am a freshman in college?
No, this program is limited to enrolled full-time sophomore and graduate students during the 2022-2023 academic school year. May I apply if my plans are to attend a two-year college first and then transfer to a four-year university?
The program is only open to eligible full-time sophomore and graduate students enrolled during the 2022-2023 academic school year who plan to attend one of the identified 24 undergraduate and the 26 graduate programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and including four Historically Black Medical Schools. The scholarship is not available to students applying to community colleges.

I am undecided on my area of study/major, can I still apply?
Scholars must demonstrate an interest in pursuing Business, Health-focused social work, Nursing, Public health, STEM, or a healthcare related graduate program.

Are international students on F1 visas eligible to apply?
No. United States citizens and permanent residents who meet all other eligibility requirements are eligible to apply.

Is there a GPA requirement?
Yes. Students must possess a minimum of 3.0 GPA to be eligible. Post-acceptance into the
program, scholars will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA to be eligible for scholarship renewals.

Can I keep my scholarship if I switch majors or transfer to another university?
The scholarship follows the selected scholars. Scholars must continue to pursue a full-time
undergraduate or graduate degree in any of the majors outlined above.

What does the selection process entail?
The selection process aims to assess all eligibility requirements and critical skills that will enable your success in the program.

If I’m accepted, what will my experience look like?
Scholars will receive mentorship from Novartis employees, as well as leadership development and career readiness module courses. In addition, scholars will participate in a virtual brand immersion program to provide a deeper career development opportunity and education about
different career paths within the healthcare sector.
