Overview

The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) and Patent Quality Education and Training Foundation (PTF) are proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding law students attending one of the 47 publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) law schools. Selected scholars will receive a one-year scholarship of up to $5,000 for the 2019-2020 academic school year, which will be used to cover the costs of tuition and fees, on-campus room and board and required textbooks purchased from member-schools. The funds are applied in the 2020 spring semester.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Enrolled as a law student for the 2019-2020 school year at one of the following 47 TMCF member-schools law schools:
    • Florida A & M College of Law
      Howard University School of Law
    • North Carolina Central University Law School
    • Thurgood Marshall School of Law
    • UDC David A. Clark School of Law
    • Southern University Law Center
  • Current grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate leadership ability through a variety of measures
  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident with valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551

Applicants must submit the following documents for consideration:

  • Current Resume
  • A copy of the 2019-2020 FAFSA Confirmation form and a copy of your student Account
  • Requirement Page-Indicating all required documents from your institution’s financial aid department has been submitted
  • Provide the transcript (official or unofficial) for your most recently completed academic term
  • Please provide an email for two recommenders to complete a character reference form. They will be required to answer three questions regarding your character reference.
  • Essay: Please answer the following questions (Maximum 500 words):
    • Explain how an award from Thurgood Marshall College Fund and PTFoundation will help make a difference in meeting your goal of engaging in the full-time practice of patent law.
