FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, DC (November 21, 2018) – BizBash, the premier resource for event and meeting professionals in North America, has announced the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s 31st Anniversary Awards Gala has been recognized on its annual list of Top 100 Events in Washington, DC. These annual experiences have continued to break barriers, challenge the norm, and push limits to reach and engage audiences in a thoughtful way.
The Anniversary Awards Gala was held October 29, 2018, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel raising over $5.6M. The audience consisted of over 400 students that attended TMCF’s Leadership Institute, and over 1,000 civic, corporate, government and education leaders from all over the country. Congressman Mark Walker (R- NC) and Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax (D-VA) presented Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, president of Tennessee State University, and international president, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, with TMCF’s Educational Leadership Award; Dennis A. Muilenburg, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The Boeing Company, was the TMCF CEO of the Year Award honoree; and Leslie T. Thornton, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of WGL Holdings Inc. and Washington Gas, received the TMCF Thurgood Marshall Legacy Award.
“One of the trends we’re seeing with events is a desire to emphasize social good,” said Beth Kormanik, BizBash editor in chief. “Are the panels at conferences and conventions diverse? How are music festivals taking care of the environment? What form does corporate social responsibility take at a trade show? Attendees are asking, and the best events are responding.”
“TMCF is proud to move up to #6 on the prestigious BizBash list for the work we do on behalf of our nation’s HBCUs through our gala,” said Harry L. Williams, TMCF president & CEO. “In a town with so many galas, this is an awesome recognition because it shows our students, our partners and the entire Black College community that TMCF’s team will put on a first-class gala to support our HBCUs, and that is a big deal.”
NOTE: TMCF president & CEO Harry L. Williams and BizBash editor in chief Beth Kormanik are available for additional comments.
