Job Description

Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the black college community. TMCF member-schools include the publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and several Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs).

As the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), you play a crucial role in advancing the organization’s mission and objectives. This high-level executive position requires effective collaboration with both the executive team and various departments, ensuring that marketing and communication efforts are in sync with TMCF’s overall strategic goals. Your duties encompass developing and disseminating messages that resonate with and further TMCF’s mission, strengthening the organization’s brand, and leading pivotal communication initiatives.

Responsibilities

The Chief Marketing and Communications Officer is expected to:

Communications 

  • Develop a strategic communication plan to amplify TMCF’s role as an industry leader and support its strategic business objectives.
  • Offer strategic communications advice and, as appropriate, direction to the CEO and executive team, including securing impactful speaking and presentation opportunities.
  • Guarantee uniform delivery of TMCF’s brand profile and core messages across various channels.
  • Work collaboratively with TMCF divisions to ensure cohesive messaging and transparent communication of business goals, strategies, and outcomes.
  • Ensure collection of marketing-related data in alignment with the organizational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Employ data and analytics to shape communication strategies and assess their impact.
  • Manage and refine TMCF’s website content strategy and administration.
  • Oversee TMCF’s digital marketing strategies, including but not limited to social media.
  • Lead TMCF’s strategic communications team, including but limited to growing brand profile, managing core messaging, and addressing brand and reputation-related challenges.
  • Represent TMCF as the chief media spokesperson as directed by the President and CEO.

 

Marketing

  • Lead TMCF’s marketing, communications, and event initiatives.
  • Boost TMCF’s profile and reputation, positioning it as the preeminent advocate and supporter of the Black College Community.
  • Create and implement comprehensive communications and marketing strategies targeting diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Direct digital marketing efforts, encompassing social media, website, email, and mobile platforms.
  • Develop engaging communications and marketing materials for various media outlets.
  • Coordinate and oversee major meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Manage consultant, vendor and facility contracts.
  • Mentor and guide TMCF’s marketing, communications, and events personnel.
  • Contribute to organizational fundraising
  • Develop and manage the marketing division’s budget.
  • Participate in executive leadership discussions and decision-making processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Demands

  • Occasional travel required: 30%

 

Required Competencies and Qualification

  • At least 15 years of senior-level experience in marketing, communications and public relations, preferably in higher education, major corporations, or PR firms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or related field; master’s degree in a related discipline is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skill in communications strategy and tactics, including brand building and reputation management.
  • Experience as a primary spokesperson, adept at managing confidential and sensitive information.
  • Strong networking abilities, analytical mindset, and innovative approach to communications.
  • Prior experience interacting with national media and extensive contacts with national media or local media in certain major markets (e.g., Washington, D.C., New York City) and/or in the entertainment
  • Capability to provide effective counsel to senior executives and act as a trusted advisor.
  • Excellent collaborative, coaching, and advising skills, with the confidence to interact with high-level executives.
  • Advocacy for robust internal communications, recognizing its influence on employee engagement and productivity.
  • In-depth understanding of the industry TMCF operates in, including competitors, market trends, and regulatory environment.
  • Familiarity with marketing tools and platforms, such as CRM software, analytics tools, and content management systems.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with industry partners, media, and other stakeholders.

  • Salary Range: $175,000- $230,000
  • Health, Dental, FSA, 403(b), up to 20% bonus potential
