The Act Reauthorizes the HBCU Historic Preservation Program
WASHINGTON, DC (March 14, 2019) – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) commends President Trump for signing the Natural Resources Management Act (S. 47) into law earlier this week. The Natural Resources Management Act includes language to reauthorize the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Historic Preservation program within the U.S. Department of Interior from fiscal years (FY) 2019 through FY 2025.
Our HBCUs are, collectively, one of the most important vehicles of opportunity through higher education in America. Without them, we would have no Thurgood Marshall, Oprah Winfrey, Barbara Jordan or Chadwick Boseman. Preserving the legacies of our institutions is critical to ensuring that they are able to build upon those respective legacies and not only continue to survive, but thrive.
We thank Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Congressman James Clyburn (D-SC) for their bipartisan leadership in helping to ensure the reauthorization of the HBCU Historic Preservation program be included in the Natural Resources Management Act. TMCF’s congressional advocacy work will continue to ensure the authorized funds are fully appropriated in FY 2020.
