TMCF STATEMENT ON SAM CLOVIS’ NOMINATION TO SERVE AS UNDER SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE FOR RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND ECONOMICS

Washington, DC (July 20, 2017) – Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) applauds President Trump’s intent to nominate, friend to TMCF and the Black College Community, Dr. Samuel H. Clovis, Jr., to serve as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics.

“In his capacity as Chief Policy Advisor on the Trump Campaign, Dr. Clovis reached out to TMCF several times prior to the 2016 Election to learn more about the needs of the 1890 Land Grant HBCU schools,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., TMCF President & CEO. “Shortly after the election results were announced, Dr. Clovis began meeting with TMCF to develop an action plan to deepen the USDA’s relationship with our Ag Schools in order to help them build capacity, infrastructure, and career paths for their graduates.”

TMCF remains committed to finding partners who understand, appreciate and value HBCU’s. Our strategic engagement with the Trump Administration and the 115th Congress is based on relationships and strong advocacy to ensure that TMCF’s 47 member-schools have the support they need to not only survive but thrive. We are hopeful our positive working relationship with the USDA will continue with Secretary Purdue and, if confirmed, Dr. Sam Clovis in his capacity as Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics.

Note: TMCF President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. is available for further comment.
